Michael Joyal grew up in Northern Canada. In his youth, Michael was influenced by comic books, popular culture, mythology, movies, music and fairy tales. Influences that continue to be seen in his work today. Michael graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1993 earning his B.F.A. in painting.
Michael took part in the 90’s Edmonton independent comic book scene and a major force in the creation of the Edmonton Small Press Organization. He edited the groups’ anthology Prairie Jam for 12 issues. Michael has also released 11 issues of his own book, CrUDE. During this time, he began showing in independent spaces; producing paintings that were very influenced by comic books and storytelling. He began to teach himself the medium of watercolour.
In early 2000, Michael moved to Winnipeg where he lives today. Michael has shown in solo and group shows in Canada and the United States. He has been interviewed by The Edmonton Journal, The Winnipeg Free Press and CBC Radio. He spent one year drawing a single piece of art for each day, culminating in the show "365 Days Before I Sleep" in 2012 at Cre8ery Gallery. Michael illustrated the book Clouds in 2015 for At Bay Press.
His current work is a modern take on myths and fairy tales as 30 X 40 inch watercolour paintings.
